Holy Week 3: Tuesday

Tuesday. Sometimes the crummiest day of the week. Especially in the late winter/early spring, when the weather doesn’t know what it wants to do.

Speaking of things to do, I’m going to take a little bit of an unusual tack on today’s entry. So far I’ve been tracking with Jesus in the last week of His life. I’m not going to do that today, since there’s an important issue I think He would want to be raised here: human trafficking.

I read a piece that  really got to me in Newsweek, and it prompted the question: how can these things happen? Do human beings have no shame, that they would willingly exploit another to earn their daily bread? What lies behind the desperation that lies at the heart of the issue, for both victims and perpetrators?

I confess that I don’t have an answer to any of those questions. However, I do have an answer to the most important one of all: What can be done about it?

Great place to start: International Justice Mission. Spend some time exploring, reading the statistics. Challenge yourself to go to the next level and get involved with the issue, whether it’s talking to people at your house of worship, presenting something at school, whatever it is you want to do. After all, Jesus came to set us all free; I think that we as Christians owe it to Him to rescue the victims of this modern-day slavery.
